After reading Sarah Kathryn Cleaver’s ‘Ugly’ essay I felt that my location did not reflect what I wanted to create. I had chosen to use the outside of West Orchards shopping centre as my location as I felt it was a slightly dull area. But Cleavers essay made me think about what is typically viewed as ‘ugly’ – West Orchards is one of Coventry’s main attractions, it is constantly changing to appeal more to potential customers, and in my opinion is not visually unappealing. I want to use an unconventional location to show that beauty and inspiration can be found in unusual places, I want my final images to challenge peoples view of Coventry being dull and uninspiring. As I myself find Coventry an uninspiring place I need a location that will force me to look closer and pay attention to what is around me. I think that Coventry is a little underrated and perhaps because I have become overly familiar with the city I have gotten bored by it. I have decided that I want my new location to be on the outskirts of the city centre, I want to find a slightly neglected and forgotten area and use the visuals of the location as inspiration for how my project will develop. When looking on the maps I noticed Burges street – a street that I have walked by on my route to town for the past 8 years. I have never really payed much attention to this street as it is a little run down, however in passing I noticed how many of the buildings were closed down – the old metro building seemed so beautifully designed yet completely ignored. I decided to look around the street and came across an old car park, from looking at this location I felt that it would be a perfect place to photograph – it summed up a stereotypical view of Coventry – grey, forgotten, rundown and a concrete jungle. I feel that creating images involving this new location will challenge me – as the area is considered to be ‘ugly’ and unappealing – it does not match the stereotypical idea of beauty. I now need to think of a way I can shape an idea based on this new location.
